Missed Opportunities: Ghana Held to Frustrating 0-0 Draw by Sudan

Ghana and Sudan played to a goalless draw in a crucial 2024 AFCON Group F qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving fans on edge as the Black Stars missed several opportunities to secure a win.

Despite dominating possession and maintaining pressure throughout the game, Ghana couldn’t find the breakthrough against a resilient Sudanese defence.

Ghana was the more assertive team, taking control of the match with 60% possession and attempting 20 shots, 7 of which were on target.

Their offensive intent was clear, as they won an impressive 16 corners, relentlessly pushing for a goal. However, Sudan stood firm, absorbing the pressure and keeping the game level with a disciplined defensive performance.

Sudan, while under considerable pressure for most of the match, managed only 6 shots, with 4 of them testing Ghana’s defence.

Though they struggled to keep hold of the ball, completing 268 passes with a 69% accuracy rate compared to Ghana’s 371 passes, their ability to hold off Ghana’s constant attacks earned them a crucial point.

The physical nature of the match was evident, with both teams committing fouls throughout. Ghana had 14 fouls to Sudan’s 11, with the referee handing out a total of three yellow cards—two to Sudanese players and one to a Ghanaian. Despite the aggressive play, no red cards were issued.

As the final whistle blew, it was clear that Ghana would walk away disappointed. They had dominated the match but were unable to convert their chances into goals.

The result leaves Ghana still without a win in the group after three games, sitting in third place with just 2 points. Sudan, on the other hand, will likely be more satisfied with the result, as they move into second place with 4 points.

This goalless draw puts significant pressure on Ghana’s upcoming fixtures as they look to regain momentum in the race for AFCON qualification.

The Black Stars will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to turn their dominance into victories.

Meanwhile, Sudan will feel confident about their defensive solidity, which could be key to their own qualification hopes.
