Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo has declared former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian player in the history of the English Premier League (EPL).
Despite acknowledging Asamoah Gyan’s impressive stint at Sunderland, Semenyo ultimately placed Essien at the top of his list.
“Has to be Michael Essien. I want to say Asamoah Gyan; just what he’s done at Sunderland but yeah, Michael Essien, he’s the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time),” Semenyo stated during an interview with Bleacher Report.
Semenyo, who currently plays for AFC Bournemouth, participated in a segment that tested his knowledge of Ghanaian players in the Premier League.

While he expressed admiration for Gyan’s contributions to Sunderland, he believed Essien’s legacy at Chelsea made him the standout choice.
Michael Essien, who played for Chelsea between 2005 and 2014, was a key figure in the club’s success, winning multiple league titles and the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
His powerful midfield presence and ability to dominate games earned him global recognition.
During the interview, Semenyo also shared an interesting personal connection to Ghana’s Premier League history, revealing that his father once played alongside former Black Stars and Leeds United striker Tony Yeboah.
Yeboah holds the distinction of being the first Ghanaian player to score in the English top flight, famous for his stunning long-range goals.
