Lionel Messi scored his 109th international goal against Canada in the ongoing Copa America tournament, leading Argentina to the finals.

Julian Alvarez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and Messi found the back of the net in the 51st minute after redirecting Enzo Fernandez’s shot past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.

Messi has been in incredible form, scoring 28 goals in his last 25 matches for Argentina, with 14 of those coming in Copa America matches, putting him just three goals away from the record.

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the current record with 130 international goals, followed closely by Iran’s Al Daei with 108 goals from 1993 to 2006.

Argentina celebrated its independence day with a victory, extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

The Albiceleste will be vying for a record 16th Copa title as they face either Uruguay or Colombia in the final on Sunday at Miami Gardens, Florida.

With aspirations of winning back-to-back Copa America titles leading up to the 2022 World Cup, Argentina is looking to emulate Spain’s success when La Roja won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships along with the 2010 World Cup.
