Marseille player, Rayan Hassad has been suspended for posting a birthday message to his teammate on social media.
The 18-year-old shared what seemed to be a harmless birthday wish for Chancel Mbemba, a former defender for Newcastle and Porto, on his Instagram story.
However, Mbemba is currently under suspension from Marseille due to allegations of “poor behaviour” towards the management during training sessions.
According to La Provence, as reported by Get French Football News, Hassad’s post was deemed “the final straw” in a series of prior issues involving him.
Although he has yet to make his first-team debut and primarily plays for the reserve team, Hassad received a letter from the club referencing his birthday message, along with accusations of insulting a teammate and disregarding instructions from staff.
In response to his suspension, Hassad stated that it was a “precautionary measure,” expressing his regret and clarifying that he did not intend to “hurt anyone.”
“I was indeed suspended as a precautionary measure by Olympique de Marseille following an Instagram story where I wished a teammate a happy birthday,” he wrote.
“I would like to clarify that at no time did I want to cause harm to my club and its management. It was a simple birthday message, as I usually do with other teammates. If I hurt someone, I apologise but know that this was never my intention.”
Mbemba had been playing regularly and helped Marseille reach the semi finals of the Europa League last season.
