Manchester United have officially announced the mutual termination of Mason Greenwood’s contract subsequent to an internal investigation.
The club initiated an inquiry in February after the English forward had charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault against him dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following his arrest for the alleged offences, and he has not participated in any club activities or trained with his teammates at Carrington since then.
Despite the club’s efforts to reinstate him, they have decided against it due to widespread criticism. Match of the Day presenter and former England international striker Gary Lineker expressed his reaction to the latest development on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The 21-year-old in question had two years remaining on his contract, with the option of an additional 12 months. However, he has now expressed his intention to reinvigorate his career elsewhere.
It is improbable that the England international will participate in the Premier League again, and it is reasonable to assume that his international career with the Three Lions has come to a close.
Although Greenwood was never convicted in court, the evidence that was widely circulated on social media at the time of the incident significantly damaged his reputation. It may prove challenging for the Man United academy graduate to secure a transfer to another European club, leaving Saudi Pro League teams as the most probable suitors.
Greenwood amassed 35 goals and 12 assists in 139 games for the Red Devils and was widely regarded as one of the most promising forwards in the world during his brief tenure at Old Trafford. Regrettably, he must now seek alternative avenues to continue his career and clear his name, but the allegations will likely follow him for a considerable period.
