Actor and comedian Kalybos couldn’t hide his admiration as he spoke passionately at the unveiling of Ghana’s free dialysis initiative.
The program, spearheaded by the government, promises life-saving treatment for kidney patients, fully covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). His excitement, however, came with a plea for responsibility.
“I am happy to witness this initiative today, and I pray that it continues. My only plea is that we don’t politicize it,” Kalybos stated earnestly, reflecting on Ghana’s history of well-meaning programs often clouded by partisan politics.

“Over the years, we’ve seen different governments turn such programs into political issues. Funding dialysis centers is expensive in other countries, so if we have this right here in Ghana, we must value and hold on to it.”
Joining him at the event was fellow comedian Jeneral Ntatia, who echoed the sentiments of gratitude and hope while pledging his support to promote health awareness. “I’m happy this initiative is in place, and I’ll do my best to raise awareness on the importance of staying healthy,” Ntatia said.
This historic move, announced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during his tour of the Ashanti Region in November 2024, has been heralded as a major step forward in Ghana’s healthcare sector.
Initially, the NHIS only provided free dialysis for patients under 18 and over 60, leaving a significant age group struggling to afford the treatment. However, with the updated policy, all kidney patients are now covered, irrespective of age.
