Ahead of the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana, met with prominent actors, musicians, and creatives to discuss his vision for the creative arts sector.
This gathering not only highlighted the importance of the arts in national development but also laid out strategic initiatives aimed at empowering the industry. Here are five pivotal talking points from the meeting that could reshape the landscape for Ghanaian creatives.
1. Tax Incentives to Foster Growth
One of the standout proposals from Bawumia was the introduction of tax breaks specifically designed for film producers and musicians. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden of production costs, thereby encouraging more investment in the creative sector. By making it easier for artists to produce high-quality work, the government hopes to stimulate a thriving creative economy
2. Enhancing Digital Platforms for Artists
Bawumia emphasized the necessity of establishing digital and streaming platforms that cater to Ghanaian artists. This would not only provide more effective distribution channels but also enhance global exposure for local talents. As streaming becomes a dominant form of content consumption, supporting these platforms could significantly increase artists’ reach and revenue

5. Facilitating International Travel for Artists
Finally, Bawumia proposed the establishment of a Travel Protocol Service (TPS) aimed at easing international travel for artists. This initiative is intended to enable creatives to participate in performances and collaborations abroad, fostering international partnerships that could elevate Ghana’s cultural footprint globally
