Ghanaian actor Richard Kweku Asante, popularly known as Kalybos, has called on the creative arts industry and Ghanaians at large to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s digitalization agenda.
Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Bloggers Association, led by President Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah, along with online writers and influencers in Accra, Kalybos highlighted the importance of digitalization for the future of the industry.
He emphasized how critical it is for stakeholders in the creative space to recognize the transformative role digitalization plays in enhancing their work.
“With everything evolving, it is wise to champion behind him [Dr. Bawumia] and understand that this is the platform we are moving towards, and it will benefit us in the long run,” Kalybos noted. He pointed out that digital platforms now allow Ghanaians to stream local movies and other creative content globally, significantly expanding their reach.
Kalybos also commended the introduction of the Ghana Card, likening it to the social security system in other countries, which serves as a vital identification tool for citizens.
“The Ghana Card has been the best thing that has ever happened to every Ghanaian. When you travel outside, you realize you can’t do anything without a number that identifies you, and that’s what the Ghana Card is for us,” he said.
However, Kalybos stressed that for Ghana’s creative industry to thrive in the digital age, the country needs to invest in proper infrastructure and mechanisms.
He cited Nigeria’s success in establishing hubs for platforms like Netflix and Amazon as a model Ghana should emulate.
“Nigeria has been able to get a Netflix hub. Without infrastructure or mechanisms to run the digital space, you can’t achieve much. Nigeria’s creative industry has thrived with the presence of Netflix and Amazon agencies. The same needs to happen in Ghana,” he explained.
Kalybos’ appeal underscores the need for continued focus on digital infrastructure to help Ghana’s creative industry compete on the global stage.
By backing Dr. Bawumia’s digitalization drive, he believes the country can unlock new opportunities for growth and innovation in the arts and beyond.
