In a significant legal move that underscores the ongoing tensions within the iconic 1990s hip-hop group The Fugees, Pras Michel has filed a lawsuit against his fellow bandmate Lauryn Hill.
The lawsuit, which was submitted in Manhattan’s Southern District on October 1, accuses Hill of fraud and breach of contract following the abrupt cancellation of their highly anticipated 2023 reunion tour.
In the lawsuit, Michel claims that Hill mismanaged the group’s finances and attempted to “usurp control” of its business operations and trademark. “Lauryn’s actions have put the entire future of The Fugees at risk,” Michel stated. “She turned down a $5 million offer for us to perform at Coachella, and that was a huge opportunity for all of us.”
The complaint also highlights Hill’s “chronic tardiness” to performances, which Michel alleges contributed to the tour’s demise. “We were counting on this tour, and her repeated lateness was unacceptable. It led to significant financial penalties against me,” he added.
Michel’s legal troubles are compounded by his conviction earlier this year for funneling money from a billion-dollar Malaysian scam into U.S. politics.
His lawyer claims that Hill exploited this vulnerable situation, saying, “Ms. Hill manipulated Mr. Michel into an unfair agreement for The Fugees’ 2023 reunion tour.”
In response to the lawsuit, Hill has categorically dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and filled with “false claims and unwarranted attacks.” She asserted that Michel had received overpayments from previous tours and has failed to repay loans that were extended to him out of goodwill.
“It’s disappointing to see this level of deception coming from someone I considered a brother,” Hill remarked. “The truth is, I have done everything I can to support him and the group.”
The lawsuit and the accompanying statements from both artists reveal a deepening rift within The Fugees, who are celebrated for timeless hits like “Killing Me Softly” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
As tensions rise, Hill is scheduled to embark on a European tour this fall as part of “Ms. Lauryn Hill & the Fugees,” while Michel’s attorney confirmed that he will not participate in any future performances with the group.
This unfolding drama not only shines a light on the internal struggles of The Fugees but also raises questions about the future of one of hip-hop’s most beloved groups.
With both artists standing firm in their positions, fans are left wondering if this dispute will lead to a permanent fracture in a legacy that has brought joy to millions.
