Leaked Dampare Tape: COP Mensah ‘Confuses’ Parliamentary Committee

Commission of the Police (COP) George Alex Mensah has broken his silence by claiming that the audio recording in which he was allegedly heard trying to get rid of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Akuffo Dampare was tampered with and that he cannot claim responsibility for all the contents captured in the footage.

During his testimony before a parliamentary committee on Thursday, August 31, 2023, COP Mensah stated that while he recognised his voice on the audio, he did not make some of the statements he heard on it. He also claimed that his voice was probably manufactured and that the recording detailing the alleged conspiracy had been manipulated.

“I identify some voices that resemble mine, but I cannot state specifically that these are my voices. I hear a voice that represents my voice but I can’t accept everything in the conversation… the audio that I listened to here today is an edited version of the conversation that we had. And because of that, wholly this audio that we have listened to is not genuine,” he said.

When asked if he meant that his voice on the tape had been doctored, COP Mensah said, “exactly, honourable chair.”

Also, he denied any intention to fire the IGP, despite having met with the individual who admitted to recording the audio in question—former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu.

“Mr Chair, what I admit as correct is that we had a meeting with Mr. Bugri Naabu, but we didn’t have any plan to remove the IGP because I don’t remove IGP and I don’t appoint IGP.”

An audio recording of a police commissioner and a politician reportedly plotting to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, was recently leaked to the media.

The voices captured in the taped, voiced out their displeasure with the IGP for allegedly unwilling to coordinate police operations to correspond with the goals of the ruling party. They voiced their disapproval of his management style and his supposed ties to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
