Law Must Prevail, But Be Lenient- Adjetey Anang Reacts to Anti-Galamsey Protests

Renowned Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang has weighed in on the recent arrests of anti-galamsey protesters, expressing his understanding of their cause while acknowledging the need for lawful conduct.

Speaking on the Class Morning Show, the actor shared his thoughts on the matter, describing the protesters as “a group of frustrated people, concerned citizens, who wanted to let governance know that galamsey has to be stopped.”

Illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” has become a significant environmental and social issue in Ghana, leading to the widespread degradation of land and water bodies.

The protesters, who were arrested during a demonstration, were attempting to draw attention to this national crisis, advocating for stricter action against illegal mining activities.

Anang sympathized with the protesters’ cause, highlighting their frustration with the ongoing environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

“The protesters, representing a whole lot of people, were only trying to do something to challenge authorities to address a national menace,” he explained.

However, the actor also acknowledged that while their intentions were valid, breaking the law during protests cannot be excused.

“If in the course of that they did a few things to break the law – yes, the law can have its due way because we can’t say that just because they were addressing a sensitive topic, even if they break the law, we should turn a blind eye to that,” he remarked.

Despite his recognition of the law’s role, Adjetey Anang called for leniency towards the protesters, noting that their actions were driven by genuine concern for the country.

“I’m hoping they’ve not broken any law but the law, I’d appeal, should be a bit lenient to these people [if they have],” he added, emphasizing that their intentions were noble and focused on urging the government to act against illegal mining.

Anang further expressed his frustration that those causing the most harm through galamsey are often not held accountable.

“At the end of the day, the people who are causing much more harm are not behind bars,” he stated, suggesting that the focus should be on holding those responsible for the destruction of Ghana’s environment accountable.
