Filmmakers Should Craft Protest Stories, Not Just Join Demo- Adjetey Anang Urges

Celebrated Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang has weighed in on the ongoing national conversation surrounding illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and the recent protests calling for stricter government action.

In a candid reflection on the role of artists in society, Anang emphasized the power of storytelling as a tool for protest, suggesting that filmmakers and actors can play a pivotal role in the fight against this environmental menace.

Speaking about the aftermath of the recent anti-galamsey demonstrations, Anang highlighted how important it is for creatives to engage in advocacy.

“We have learned to tell these stories so well; we adapt them and change certain lines for the audience to enjoy. However, there are serious issues happening out there that require our attention,” he stated.

Rather than merely joining street protests, Anang believes the film industry can craft meaningful narratives that amplify the voices of those affected by galamsey.

He advocates for integrating protest themes into film scripts and performances, positioning cinema as a powerful medium for activism. “We can craft protest roles in the stories we tell, and that’s the best way to make our voices heard, louder than simply hitting the streets,” he added.

Anang’s comments come at a time when many Ghanaian creatives are increasingly using their platforms to advocate for social and environmental change.

His suggestion reflects a growing sentiment that art can be a more sustained and impactful form of protest, reaching audiences who may not otherwise engage with these critical issues.

With illegal mining continuing to ravage many communities across the country, and public demonstrations raising awareness but often met with limited government response, Anang’s call for creative activism offers a new approach—one that combines entertainment with advocacy to bring about lasting change.
