John Dumelo has passionately expressed his concern over the deteriorating quality of drinking water in Ghana in a video shared by JoyNews on X.
His comments came during an anti-galamsey (illegal mining) protest organized by the Free The Citizens group, which aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of illegal mining on the environment, particularly water bodies.
Dumelo highlighted the pressing need for clean drinking water, lamenting the silence of many members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on this critical issue.
“We need clean drinking water. And it’s surprising that most of the NPP members are silent on this issue. This is our future we are talking about. I have kids and we want to make sure that during that time they would have clean drinking water,” he emphasized.
The issue of water pollution, particularly caused by galamsey activities, has been a growing concern in Ghana, with many rivers and water bodies becoming heavily polluted due to the irresponsible practices of illegal miners.
The situation has sparked numerous protests and calls for stronger government intervention to protect the environment and secure access to clean water for future generations.
Dumelo did not shy away from drawing a comparison between the current administration and previous governments. “I don’t want to compare, but of course, during the NDC [National Democratic Congress] time, I don’t think the water was this polluted.”
While acknowledging that environmental degradation is not a problem that emerged overnight, Dumelo pointed out that the situation has worsened under the current leadership.
He also addressed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directly, urging him to take meaningful action against galamsey and fulfill his promise to address the issue.
“That’s why we are saying that Nana Addo, who is the president, should do something about it. He said, of course, he’s putting his presidency on the line, and so I don’t think he wants to leave this kind of uncouth legacy.”
The demand for clean drinking water is not just an environmental issue but a matter of public health, and as Dumelo points out, it is a critical concern for the future of Ghana and its people.
