New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has asked the party’s leadership to ensure a free and fair primary.

According to him, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and a few other high-ranking government appointees should stop advocating for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In his view, the national executive and party machinery should give all candidates an equal opportunity to address party members and activists during the nomination process.

The former NPP General Secretary made these claims in an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM’s “Kokrokoo” on Monday. He said that some party members are being forced to join the vice president to campaign.

“Dr. Bawumia has been Vice President for seven (7) years; he has his own strength, so they should let him conduct his own campaign. It’s difficult; we source for our own campaign funds, but for him as Vice President, he is fortunate because of state resources (vehicles, fuel, etc.), so they should let him run his own campaign without these logistical supports… The President cannot play the ostrich and pretend he is not privy to what is going on,” he said.

On the other hand, Kwabena Agyapong isn’t the only NPP member to have already picked up an election form. So far, seven people have picked up nomination forms to run for the flagbearer race. On Tuesday, a group led by Fred Oware, the former CEO of the Bui Power Authority, and Sammi Awuku, the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, picked up forms on behalf of Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh, Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afryie Akoto, and Energy Analyst Kwadwo Poku have all picked up forms for the flagbearer race.
