The Ghana Premier League may soon see the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. This hint was provided by Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
According to Ghanasoccernet, while VAR is utilized in over 100 countries, its presence is mainly in developed nations and high-revenue leagues.
In 2023, FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested the potential for a more cost-effective version designed for developing nations like Ghana, a vision that Okraku appears to support.
He highlighted the association’s commitment to introducing VAR in the Ghana Premier League to resolve concerns and inconsistencies in officiating.
“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we will do to introduce VAR into football, we will, as part of our overall strategy for improving refereeing starting from our GPL, we will. It’s coming,” he stated during the Meet the Press event on Friday, as reported by 3 Sports.
Ghana first utilised VAR during the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where a penalty decision was reversed with the help of VAR.
