A few days ago, Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter Kuami Eugene sparked controversy with his remarks about gospel musicians Joyce Blessing and Empress Gifty.
Kuami Eugene, who wrote the song “Victory” for Joyce Blessing and “Watch Me” for Empress Gifty, expressed disappointment that Joyce Blessing did not promote “Victory” as effectively as Empress Gifty promoted “Watch Me.”
In this regard, musician and entertainment pundit Kojo Kinn has criticized Kuami Eugene for his comments, describing them as insensitive.
Kinn highlighted that Joyce Blessing may have had valid reasons for not promoting the song as extensively as Empress Gifty, such as a lack of funds or resources.
He emphasized that Kuami Eugene’s expectations were selfish and did not consider the other factors that contribute to a song’s success.
“As a writer, Kuami Eugene was being selfish. He was expecting the song to perform to a certain level but wasn’t considering the other factors that make a song successful,” Kinn stated.
“What he said wasn’t good because Joyce would hear it and feel bad. She had her reasons why she could not promote it as much as Empress Gifty.

Joyce Blessing’s team has not publicly responded to Kuami Eugene’s comments, but it is believed that she felt hurt by his remarks.
The criticism has brought attention to the challenges that artists face in promoting their work, especially when resources are limited.
Kuami Eugene’s comments have ignited a debate about the responsibilities of songwriters and artists in promoting their work.
