Kobbie Mainoo, a young Ghanaian player of English birth, has been named Manchester United’s Young Player of the Year.

The youngster who is having a breakthrough season, was given the Jimmy Murphy Award following his stellar performance throughout their campaign.

After starting against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup match, Mainoo made his first team debut in January. Since then, he has made two more first-team outings. With two goals and two assists for the U21s in Premier League 2, the gifted midfielder has also been crucial for Manchester United.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. I have been at this club all my life and it’s all been building to tonight. And to have my family here watching me, surrounding me, it is just amazing,” he said.

“I’ve been in training with the lads quite a few times. They all made me feel welcome and all gave me words of advice and encouragement. So I felt at home.

“To stay around it and to keep on getting more games is the ultimate goal. I want to stay at this club; I’ve been here my whole life.”

Kobbiie Mainoo biography

The Stockport, England, native Mainoo began playing football as a youngster with Cheadle & Gatley Junior Football Club before switching to Manchester United at the age of nine. In May 2022, Mainoo committed to his first professional deal.

As a result of his efforts, particularly a strong performance in the middle of the field against Carlisle United in the EFL Trophy, he was called up to the senior squad for training in October 2022. On October 16, prior to a Premier League match against Newcastle United, he was first called to the bench.

On January 10, 2023, Mainoo made his competitive United debut, starting in a 3-0 EFL Cup victory over Charlton Athletic[8]. On February 19, 2023, he made his league debut, entering the game as a substitute in a 3-0 victory over Leicester City. At the under-17, under-18, and under-19 levels, Mainoo has represented England. He is qualified to represent Ghana as well.
