After Hertha Berlin’s sad 1-1 draw with VfL Bochum on Saturday, Kevin-Prince Boateng was left inconsolable as his childhood club was relegated from the Bundesliga.

The Ghanaian attacker, who will retire at the end of the current campaign, had hoped to help Berlin maintain its place in the top division. Their chances were, however, crushed when they failed to get the crucial win, which ultimately sealed their fate and sent them to the Bundesliga.

Boateng stayed at the stadium for several hours after the game to think back on his final season in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to reporters, an emotional Boateng expressed his disbelief and sorrow, saying, “I can’t realize it yet. It is just bitter, I love this club. I came here and I knew that not everything would be rosy. The fans are angry, disappointed, and sad, and that is completely normal. I can understand them, I am a Hertha fan myself.”

Boateng, who has a unique bond with Hertha Berlin from his upbringing, will get one more chance to play for the team when they play Wolfsburg in the season finale the following week.

Boateng’s tenure with Hertha Berlin has come to an end, having spent 20 years playing for clubs abroad, including Portsmouth, AC Milan, and Barcelona before returning to the team in 2021.

Boateng signed a one-year contract with a one-year option to extend on September 28, 2020, with recently promoted Serie B club Monza.

On October 24, 2020, he converted a penalty to score his first goal in a 1-2 home loss to Chievo. On December 15, 2020, Boateng assisted Monza in a 5-0 victory over Virtus Entella by scoring two goals with his head. Boateng returned to Hertha BSC on June 23, 2021
