Actor-turned-politician John Dumelo is making waves with a fresh promise aimed at addressing one of the biggest challenges Ghanaian students face: finding meaningful work experience while pursuing their education.

As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Dumelo has unveiled plans for what he calls the “School And Work” (SAW) program.

This initiative, he says, will give university students the chance to gain remote work experience with companies, blending academics with real-world job skills.

“When I become Ayawaso West MP, I will initiate the SAW; the School And Work program,” Dumelo announced on X (formerly Twitter). “University students can work remotely for various companies while studying on campus.”

The SAW program is designed to tackle the common dilemma facing students who want to gain practical experience but lack opportunities that accommodate their busy class schedules.

It also aligns with the global shift towards remote work—a trend accelerated by the pandemic.

Dumelo envisions that by creating partnerships with local and international companies, the SAW program would open up flexible roles for students in sectors like IT, marketing, administration, and customer service.

The initiative also aims to ease the financial burden on students who often juggle tight budgets, providing a steady source of income to support their education and day-to-day expenses.

Dumelo’s own background might make him especially empathetic to the challenges faced by young Ghanaians today.

After establishing himself as one of Ghana’s top actors, he transitioned into farming, business, and, ultimately, politics.

He’s no stranger to balancing multiple roles, and his experience in diverse fields may help him understand the needs of students who want to pursue both education and career goals.
