I’m Not Stealing Songs-Peter Okoye Explains ‘Winning’ Controversy

In a recent statement addressing accusations from his twin brother, Paul Okoye (Rudeboy), about the song “Winning,” Peter Okoye (Mr. P) has passionately defended his creative process and his commitment to giving credit where it’s due.

According to Peter, the claims that he stole “Winning” from his brother are entirely unfounded. In a detailed explanation, he emphasized that he has always been a strong advocate for teamwork and collaboration in his music career.

“If you have followed my journey as a solo artiste and even before, you will notice that I give people their due credit where necessary,” Peter shared. “I am a firm believer in teamwork; I know my strengths, and where I need assistance or guidance, I’m not afraid to ask or work with those who are strong in areas where I am not.”

Peter continued, outlining the steps that led to the creation of “Winning,” noting that it was a collaborative effort involving several talented individuals. His story traces back to June 2022 when he discovered a Ghana-based producer named Vampire.

Peter, after being impressed by Vampire’s work, personally reached out to him via DM and later arranged for him to travel to Lagos.

Peter shared that before doing so, he discussed the prospect with his brother and their team to ensure they were all on board with the idea. “I presented the idea of working with Vampire to my twin brother and our team, and after getting their buy-in, I flew him to Lagos.”

Upon Vampire’s arrival in Lagos, Peter proposed the idea of working on P-Square’s next album. “I presented five songs that I had already written and intended to submit to our A&R team for the album,” Peter explained. “These were: ‘JAIYE,’ ‘WINNING,’ ‘FIND SOMEBODY,’ ‘LEGENDARY,’ and ‘ATTENTION.’ Vampire produced these songs, including ‘Winning.'”

Peter also clarified that the idea for “Winning” came from a beat created by Vampire. However, he and his producer Goldswarm made significant changes to the song’s chord progression, turning it into what it is today. “I came up with the idea of changing the chord progression from the original version to what it is now, with my co-producer Goldswarm,” Peter added.

In addition, Peter shared that he had engaged a songwriter, Calypso, to write and compose the lyrics for “Winning.” “Calypso sent me the completed lyrics on the beats through a voice note, and we began working on it,” he said.

He also made it clear that his brother Paul (Rudeboy) was aware of the work being done on the song, as both brothers were present in the studio during the period of creation.

However, when Paul heard the song “Winning,” which already had its hook and chorus completed, he expressed interest in contributing to the song’s verse.

Peter explained that the agreed-upon process for working on P-Square’s songs was that each brother would work on their respective verses, leaving the other to contribute in their own time.

“The process we agreed on was to arrange the song, leave a verse for the other person, and then harmonize the chorus and refrain bits together,” Peter clarified. “He wasn’t supposed to work on it until Calypso and I finished my part, as this was part of my submission for the ‘Legendary’ album.”
