In a recent episode of the Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, Ghanaian actress and socialite Efia Odo explored the complexities surrounding submission in relationships.

Her reflections resonate with many navigating the delicate balance of power and responsibilities between partners.

“Before I can submit to a man, he has to have a certain level of responsibility. You need to be a provider, a man who respects himself, someone I can grow with and learn from,” she articulated, offering a glimpse into her expectations for a partner.

Efia’s viewpoint challenges traditional narratives that often portray submission as an automatic response from women. Instead, she underscores the significance of mutual respect and growth.

In her perspective, submission isn’t just about compliance; it’s an acknowledgement of the effort and responsibility a partner brings to the table.

“Why wouldn’t a woman be submissive if the man is doing what he’s supposed to do?” she asked, suggesting that submission should stem from a place of respect and admiration.

However, Efia didn’t shy away from addressing the discrepancies that can arise when expectations are misaligned.

“If a guy isn’t doing anything, why would you expect a woman to be submissive? It doesn’t make sense,” she stated, questioning the notion that submission should be granted without regard for a partner’s contributions.

In contemporary discussions about relationships, the call for equality and partnership is gaining traction.

Men and women alike are increasingly seeking dynamics where both parties pull their weight. This sentiment is echoed in Efia’s remarks, reinforcing the idea that relationships thrive on shared responsibility and effort.
