In response to widespread criticism and backlash, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has offered clarification on remarks she made during an interview with Onua FM on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Hawa Koomson found herself under fire after allegedly suggesting that Ghanaians troubled by high rental costs in the country should go to Canada and witness even higher rents there.

The comments drew sharp rebukes from a segment of the public, prompting the minister to issue a statement addressing the misunderstanding.

In the statement, Hawa Koomson asserted that her intention was not to trivialize the challenges faced by Ghanaians but rather to highlight the global economic hardships exacerbated by recent crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Contrary to the sensationalized reports, my intention was not to be insensitive to the valid concerns raised by citizens regarding the high cost of living,” she stated.

The minister explained that her reference to Canada was aimed at illustrating the broader trend of rising living costs worldwide.

She cited examples of exorbitant rental prices in Canada, emphasizing that her intent was to underscore the universality of the issue.

“It is therefore disheartening to witness these statements being twisted and spun for political gains,” she expressed.

Hawa Koomson, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, urged the public to disregard any portrayal suggesting insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Ghanaians.

She reassured citizens of the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced, including initiatives like the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS), recently launched to alleviate housing burdens.

“I am fully aware of the challenges our citizens are grappling with, especially on the back of post-global crises such as COVID-19 and now the Russia-Ukraine war,” she affirmed.
