Give me one reason why I should argue with these Gen Z newbies – Skrewfaze defends his legacy

Veteran Ghanaian musician, Skrewfaze, has strongly defended his claim as a legend in the Ghanaian music scene, brushing off criticism from younger generations, particularly Gen Z, who question his contributions.

In an interview on Property FM, the “Gbalagazaa” hitmaker expressed his amusement at the backlash he has received from social media users, asserting that many of those critiquing him are too young to fully understand his impact.

“Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, and the reason why I find it funny when I say I’m a legend is that when we started this thing, there was nothing like social media,” Skrewfaze explained. He pointed out that his music career predates the rise of social media platforms, which now provide a space for opinions to spread more rapidly.

According to the musician, the majority of people questioning his legendary status belong to the younger generation, which he refers to as Gen Z. “And the people commenting and bashing me are using social media, so all these people are Gen Z, which is okay because they are too young,” he said, emphasizing that many of them were not around to witness the early days of his career.

Skrewfaze questioned why he should engage in arguments with individuals who are not familiar with his contributions to the music industry.

“Give me one reason why I should be arguing with these newbies when I say I’m a legend because no pioneer or elderly person in the game has said otherwise,” he added.

While he accepts the comments and criticisms, Skrewfaze made it clear that his status in the music industry is not up for debate. “I said I am a legend in the Ghanaian music scene, whether you like it or yes, I’m a legend, and if you doubt, they can argue with their keypads,” he reiterated.

Skrewfaze rose to prominence in the early 2000s with hits like “Gbalagazaa” and “Maabena,” which earned him a reputation as a versatile and innovative artist. During a period when the Ghanaian music industry was undergoing significant changes, Skrewfaze was among the pioneers of a new sound that blended highlife, hiplife, and other genres.

His songs, which became anthems for many in Ghana and across the diaspora, continue to evoke nostalgia among those who followed his career closely.

However, as with many veterans in the industry, Skrewfaze’s prominence waned with the advent of new trends and artists, and his legacy is now being scrutinized by a younger generation that might not have experienced the cultural impact of his earlier works.

As Gen Z continues to dominate online spaces, many veteran artists find themselves reintroducing their legacies to an audience that may not be familiar with their work. While some artists, like Skrewfaze, choose to defend their status, others have embraced collaborations with younger artists or leveraged social media to re-establish their relevance.

“I said I am a legend in the Ghanaian music scene, whether you like it or yes, I’m a legend, and if you doubt, they can argue with their keypads,” Skrewfaze confidently concluded.
