The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has swiftly reacted to the sudden departure of Black Starlets coach Laryea Kingston following their loss to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship semi-final.
In the statement issued, the GFA says it respects Kingston’s choice to step down but strongly disapproves of his unprofessional conduct post-match. Kingston’s use of inappropriate language during his resignation in front of players and staff is unacceptable.
Additionally, his absence from the team’s meeting with the management committee and failure to return to the team hotel are concerning.
Consequently, Kingston will not be leading the Black Starlets in the upcoming third-place playoff against Nigeria.
Instead, the assistant coaches will assume leadership with the support of the GFA’s technical director.
The GFA reiterates its dedication to upholding a professional and respectful environment for all teams and personnel.
Giving reasons for his resignation, Kingston said had performed well since his appointment, initially as an assistant before becoming the head coach, but felt it was time to move on.
“After we came back from Russia, that’s when I decided that whether we win and qualify or not, I’m moving on. After this tournament, I’m resigning as the U-17 coach. I have made that decision already,” he said during a press conference shortly after the match.
