GFA President Kurt Okraku Announces Intention To Run Again

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has stated his decision to run again in the GFA Elections this coming October.

Okraku made the announcement at the 29th GFA Ordinary Congress. In addition to Okraku, former Ghana Football Association Vice President George Afriyie and Kojo Yankah have also declared their intention to run for president.

Although Afriyie lost to Okraku in 2019, he is still viewed as a strong competitor who might pose a serious threat to Okraku’s presidency in the future.

During the GFA elections, which will take place in October, new leaders will be selected, including the president. Okraku reaffirmed his determination to maintain his position as a leader in Ghanaian football. He spoke highly of his accomplishments as coach over the last three and a half years, citing the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the 2022 World Cup qualification against Nigeria as examples.

Recent reports indicate that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) intends to change its laws so that the president can serve for a three-year term and that there can be two vice presidents.

In 2019, the Normalisation Committee, chaired by Dr. Kofi Amoah, set a limit of a maximum of two four-year terms for the GFA presidency. Vice presidents are limited to three terms in office under present law, as are members of the Executive Council.

However, according to Joy Sports, the GFA’s Statutes Review Committee is reportedly advocating for an extension of the presidential term limits.

The Committee is said to have advocated in a report to the Executive Council that Congress permit a maximum of three consecutive terms as president. They also propose two vice presidents for the Ghana FA, one of whom must be a woman in order to lead the organisation’s women’s football programmes.
