As reported by Ghanaweb, William Essu, the former goalkeeper of Legon Cities, has tragically passed away at the age of 22.
The esteemed portal mentioned the late footballer was admitted to the University of Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region after being rushed there on Friday.
Despite undergoing various tests, doctors were unable to determine the cause of his illness. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further evaluation, but the results remained inconclusive.
Although there were signs of improvement on Saturday afternoon, Essu experienced a relapse later that evening and was pronounced dead by the doctors. It is worth noting that Essu was a member of Ghana’s U-23 team that qualified for the AFCON in Morocco last year.
During his illness, he had appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to receive his outstanding bonuses, which would have helped cover his medical expenses.
Unfortunately, he passed away without receiving the funds owed to him for his service to the country.
This unfortunate event marks the second time in less than a year that Legon Cities has lost a goalkeeper, following the passing of Sylvester Sackey in September 2023.
As per a report by Ghanasoccernet, William Essu, the goalkeeper for Ghana’s U-23 team, is currently facing health challenges and has requested the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry to release the outstanding bonuses owed to the team for their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier victory over Algeria in March 2023.
Last year, Essu, who was a member of the U-23 squad gained sympathy from many after distressing images of his deteriorating health condition circulated on the internet on September 12.
Reports suggested that Essu had been battling illness for several months and had allegedly been neglected by his club, Legon Cities. Consequently, he publicly appealed to the FA to address the unpaid bonuses.
In a letter that was shared on social media, Essu reached out to Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko, the entire management of the Black Meteors, and the Ghana FA, seeking assistance.
In the letter, Essu explained that he urgently needs to undergo another health check-up but is unable to raise the necessary funds. He has revealed that he has already exhausted all his savings in a bid to seek treatment, without success.
