FIFA Takes U20 World Cup Hosting Right Away From Indonesia

FIFA has reportedly revoked Indonesia’s hosting rights for the men’s U20 World Cup, which is scheduled to start on May 20.

Only eight weeks before the tournament began, a decision was taken in response to political unrest in Indonesia over Israel’s participation, according to the Associated Press. Israel earned a spot in the tournament in June 2022, but Indonesian officials objected to Israel’s involvement.

Despite having the largest Muslim majority in the world and no official diplomatic ties to Israel, Indonesia openly supports the Palestinian cause.

In order to discuss the situation, FIFA President Gianni Infantino convened with Erick Thohir, the head of the Indonesian Football Federation, in Doha.

The future of the tournament is unclear as there hasn’t been a definite replacement host named since the decision to revoke Indonesia’s hosting rights. FIFA states that a new host will be revealed shortly, and the tournament’s dates will not change.

Argentina, which didn’t make the cut for the competition, is allegedly keen to host. FIFA may take further disciplinary action against the soccer association of Indonesia.

A ban might prevent Indonesia from participating in the October 2026 World Cup’s Asian qualifying round. FIFA, on the other hand, appeared to clear Thohir of all responsibility. Under Thohir’s direction, FIFA personnel will continue to operate in Indonesia in the coming months.
