Former Ghanaian international John Paintsil has told MzGee on her new program, Just Being Us, how a fake story nearly ruined his career and caused him to lose a huge contract.

Paintsil explained that the difficult period started with family issues and a divorce that turned into a media spectacle.

He revealed that he lost a contract worth approximately £2.3 million. He also addressed false reports alleging that he had stabbed his ex-wife in the eye, which he clarified was untrue.

“It was a difficult moment; it all started with my family issues. Divorce and all, it became a media issue. I lost my contract, and the money involved was about £2.3 million. News came that I stabbed my ex-wife in the eye, which never happened, “Paintsil said.

“I don’t know where that news came from, and I was arrested. I was imprisoned; it was difficult, so I was out of contract for four years. No team wanted to sign me.”

Paintsil, who is presently Ghana’s assistant coach, shared that despite facing a significant setback, his determination and his mother’s unwavering prayers were crucial in helping him persevere.

He emphasized that it was his resilience and the constant support from his mother that kept him motivated during the challenging times.

“You cannot go to training and start kicking your teammates… if these 5 players are key in the team and they do not want you, they will go to the coach and say, ‘We do not want this player,” Paintsil advised.
