The BBC is reporting that Marco Angulo, the 22-year-old Ecuadorian footballer, has tragically passed away after a car accident left him severely injured just over a month ago.

His club, LDU Quito, confirmed the sad news on Tuesday morning, marking a devastating loss for the football community.

Angulo, a midfielder for LDU Quito, was involved in the crash on October 7 in the south of Ecuador’s capital, Quito.

After the incident, he spent several weeks in the hospital, undergoing multiple surgeries and remaining in intensive care for over a week. Sadly, he passed away on Monday night despite the medical team’s best efforts.

“With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito said in a statement. “We send our condolences to his family and loved ones. His loss is an irreparable one that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”

Angulo had joined LDU Quito on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati in March, with an option for the club to purchase him. Over the course of his time with the club, he made 16 appearances, with his last match being on October 6—just a day before the accident.

In addition to his club career, Angulo earned three caps for the Ecuadorian national team, making his debut in November 2022 during a goalless draw with Iraq.

His untimely death has left a profound impact on Ecuadorian football, with fans and teammates mourning the loss of a promising young player.
