Did These People Go to School?- Ola Michael Slams Galamsey Supporters

Galamsey, the illegal mining practice wreaking havoc on Ghana’s environment, has become one of the country’s most pressing issues.

Its devastating impact on rivers, forests, and the livelihoods of local communities cannot be overstated. Yet, despite the environmental crisis galamsey is causing, some Ghanaians still defend the practice.

This defence of the indefensible recently provoked a fiery response from media personality Ola Michael during his show on Neat FM, where he bluntly questioned the intellect of those who justify or support galamsey.

“Unless your brain is like that of an ant’s teeth, you cannot defend this,” he declared, his words carrying the weight of frustration shared by many Ghanaians who see their land being destroyed by illegal mining.

The analogy, though humorous, pointed to a larger truth: defending galamsey is incomprehensible to those who are truly aware of its damage.

Ola Michael’s outrage came in response to statements made by some who downplay the severity of galamsey in certain areas.

He quoted individuals who said things like, “There is no galamsey in Accra, the protesters should go to the affected areas and protest.”

These comments, suggesting that galamsey’s destruction is a localized issue rather than a national crisis, stirred Ola Michael to question whether the people making such claims are truly educated or informed.

“I wonder, did these people go to school? Are they educated?” he asked, clearly incredulous that anyone could dismiss the gravity of galamsey’s impact based on geographical technicalities.

His words reflect a frustration that has been building for years. Galamsey is not just an issue affecting rural communities.

The illegal mining practice, driven by both local and foreign interests, has turned once-thriving rivers into murky streams and fertile lands into barren wastelands.
