Ghanaian music icon Stonebwoy has voiced his support for a three-day protest set to take place from October 3 to October 5 in Accra, where activists will be demanding urgent government action on pressing national issues.
In a statement shared with his fans, Stonebwoy expressed his solidarity with the demonstrators, who are seeking justice and environmental reform in light of the ongoing illegal mining crisis, also known as “galamsey.”
“As we touch the streets to advocate for the better, as we walk in the spirit footsteps of the great ancestors that led us to freedom once upon a time, may our blood, sweat, and tears not remain in vain,” Stonebwoy said, reflecting on the deeper significance of the protest and the historical legacy of struggle for freedom in Ghana.
The protest follows the recent arrest of 53 Democracy Hub activists who were demonstrating against illegal mining, a practice that has wreaked havoc on the country’s environment.
Protesters, along with public figures like Stonebwoy, are calling for their immediate release and pushing for the government to outline a concrete plan to tackle galamsey, which has led to the destruction of land and water bodies across the nation.
“We implore the government or leadership, whether incoming or outgoing, to just validate our struggles by showing detailed plans on how to tackle the very pressing issues, such as ‘galamsey,’ that face us as Ghanaians and rigidly commit to it,” Stonebwoy added.
His words echo the frustrations of many Ghanaians who have seen little progress in curbing illegal mining activities despite repeated promises by government officials.
In addition to addressing the environmental devastation, Stonebwoy highlighted other critical national issues, such as the dilapidated state of the Korle Bu mortuary.
“Not forgetting the deplorable state of the Korle Bu mortuary, amongst many others,” he mentioned, pointing to the broader systemic problems that the country faces.
The protest is expected to draw significant attention, with activists and demonstrators hoping their voices will be heard.
For many, the fight against galamsey and the demand for better governance have become symbols of a larger struggle for accountability and sustainable development in Ghana.
