Popular Ghanaian media personality, Serwaa Amihere, has called on the youth to protest peacefully as they rally against the destructive practice of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
In a post shared on X, Serwaa offered words of encouragement and caution ahead of a planned protest by a group called Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, who are set to take to the streets of Accra today, October 3, 2024.
“Dear Ghanaian youth, we are on a good course to draw the attention of those in authority to end this life-threatening situation of illegal mining,” Serwaa wrote, underscoring the importance of the cause.
Illegal mining has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s environment, destroying water bodies, farmlands, and the livelihoods of many, while posing significant health risks.
Serwaa Amihere, known for her advocacy on social issues, also urged the protesters to remain vigilant and avoid confrontation with law enforcement during the demonstration.
“Please let’s stay safe, protest peacefully and don’t give the Police the slightest chance of arresting anyone for breaking any law,” she cautioned.
Meanwhile, the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey are reportedly planning the demonstration to express their discontent with the government’s failure to address the urgent issue of illegal mining, which is severely damaging water resources.
The protest will also highlight the necessity of releasing certain Ghanaians who have been detained for participating in a previous protest organized by Democracy Hub.
The group intends to hold the protest over three days to emphasize the critical nature of their demands for an immediate cessation of all illegal mining operations in the nation.
