Ghanaian comedian Sadik Sulley, popularly known as SDK Dele, has voiced his frustrations over illegal mining, or galamsey, during the third day of the “Stop Galamsey and Free The Citizens demonstration.
In a video shared by JoyNews on X, SDK Dele expressed his disappointment after learning that 11 new licenses had been issued for galamsey activities. He urged the authorities to be as swift in apprehending illegal miners as they were in arresting citizens during peaceful protests.
“I just heard they have issued 11 licenses for people to do galamsey right now. My expectation is that they catch them, the same way they caught the citizens that were protesting freely. They should do the same thing to them,” SDK said.
The comedian went on to call for harsher penalties for those involved in galamsey. He suggested that offenders should be given at least ten years in prison, allowing time for water bodies to recover from the damage caused by illegal mining.
“By the time they will be back, the water will be clean. When they see that the water is clean, they will realize that they were being foolish. Sorry for my language,” he added.
SDK’s comments came as part of the broader Free The Citizens and Say No To Galamsey protest, a three-day event organized by the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey.
The protests aimed to demand the release of demonstrators who were previously arrested for breaching protest laws while advocating against galamsey and pushing for stronger actions to stop environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.
