Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has spoken out against what he describes as the growing abuse of freedom of speech in Ghana, especially as it relates to public figures making reckless statements without facing any consequences.
In a video shared on social media on January 21, 2025, Manu expressed his concerns about the state of democracy in the country and its implications for societal behaviour.
“We have gotten to the point where leaders of the country should stand firm on certain issues because the jokes in the country are becoming too much,” Manu began.
He highlighted the role of law enforcement and institutions such as the courts and the military, which, according to him, should be upholding order in the country.

However, Manu pointed out that despite these institutions, individuals like media personality Captain Smart continue to make inflammatory remarks on national radio without facing any repercussions.
“Democracy isn’t helping Ghanaians. It isn’t helping Africans; in fact, it is not helping Black men. Because if it was, how can kids insult chiefs and nothing will be done to them?”
Manu questioned, drawing attention to the erosion of respect for authority in Ghana. His remarks reflect a growing concern that the freedoms guaranteed under democratic governance are being exploited in ways that threaten the fabric of social order.
The actor’s comments have sparked a debate about the fine line between free speech and the responsibility that comes with it.
While democracy allows citizens to express their opinions, Manu believes that this freedom should not be an excuse to spread insults or harm others.

He specifically addressed Captain Smart, a popular media personality known for his sharp and often controversial commentary, urging him to “tone down” his criticisms and to show greater respect for others in the public sphere.
“Our leaders should advise Captain Smart… Democracy doesn’t mean you have the right to abuse others in the country,” Manu added, calling for more active guidance from those in power to ensure that public discourse remains constructive rather than toxic.
