Afrobeats sensation Davido has spoken out to clear up misconceptions about his upbringing, following public criticisms and occasional controversies tied to his celebrity lifestyle.
During a recent visit to the Olu of Warri in Delta State, the superstar, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, addressed the public perception of his actions, reaffirming his roots in a respectful family.
“I was brought up by great parents. I come from a very respectful family but sometimes, as OBO [star], I may act out of place,” Davido said, acknowledging that his behaviour as a public figure may not always reflect the values instilled in him.

This clarification follows an incident involving fellow Afrobeats star Wizkid, who had previously taken a swipe at Davido’s family background.
The tension between the two musical giants reached a boiling point when Wizkid criticized Davido in a social media post, implying that Davido lacked a proper upbringing.
The criticism stemmed from a viral video of Davido’s uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, often referred to as the “Dancing Governor,” joyfully performing his signature dance moves.
While the video endeared the governor to many Nigerians, it also sparked debate, with some—like Wizkid—implying that such public displays reflected poorly on the family’s values.
Governor Adeleke’s dance videos, which have become viral hits, often show him at public events or political rallies, energizing crowds with his lively steps.
Although his exuberant dancing has earned him a unique connection with the people, it has also made him a target for criticism. Some have suggested that his focus on entertainment is inappropriate for a state governor.
Wizkid’s jab at Davido’s family suggested that such public antics indicated a lack of proper training and discipline within the Adeleke family.
Davido’s response to the narrative, however, highlights his pride in his family and their values.

Despite his occasional public outbursts and the controversies that surround him, he remains firm in his belief that his upbringing was rooted in respect and strong moral grounding.
Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, is a well-respected business mogul and philanthropist, while his late mother, Veronica Adeleke, was a university lecturer.
Growing up in such a family has undoubtedly shaped the musician’s outlook on life, even though his fame as a global Afrobeats superstar sometimes places him in situations that don’t always align with the values he was taught.
