David De Gea and his ‘partner in crime’ Harry Maguire had a terrible night as Manchester United were eliminated from the Europa League after a devastating three-goal loss to Sevilla.
Youssef En-Nesyri scored either side of Loic Bade’s header as the competition’s six-time winners ran riot against an abject United.
De Gea, though, was the real star of the show as his costly mistakes contributed to each of the three goals scored by the home team.
Two late own goals that United conceded after blowing an early two-goal lead from the first leg were both incredibly unfortunate and a sign of defensive weakness.
In the second leg in Seville, when United lost and was eliminated from the competition, that was cruelly exposed.
Harry Maguire, once more showed why he falls short of the standard United demands. Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial’s anonymous offensive displays tonight, which are a continuation of a long-term trend, suggest that the club should make plans to sell this summer. Last summer’s transfer window was fantastic for United, both in terms of players joining and leaving the team. This summer, we must use the same ruthlessness.
Maguire lost the ball quickly, and Sevilla seized the opportunity. While Maguire made the initial error, the pass should never have been given to him by his goalkeeper, whose judgment left much to be desired. It was a horrible moment for United.
