The Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Attorney General (A-G), and three others have been fined a sum of GH₵250,000 in compensation to a father of four who suffered erectile dysfunction following an assault by a police officer.

The High Court in Accra presided over by Justice Kwasi Adjenin-Boateng, ruled that the police officer used unreasonable force in arresting the plaintiff, Isaac Manu, which led to his inability to achieve an erection.

Isaac Manu, a welder, was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of stealing a KIA Sportage car. He filed a lawsuit against the defendants, including the IGP, the A-G, and three others, seeking damages for assault, medical expenses, psychological trauma, loss of earnings, and other losses.

According to the plaintiff, he was brutally beaten by the police officer during his arrest, resulting in deep cuts to his face and injuries to his eye. He also suffered permanent damage to his left eye and erectile dysfunction as a result of the assault.

In his judgment, Justice Adjenin-Boateng ruled that the force used by the police officer was unreasonable, entitling the plaintiff to compensation. The court awarded GH₵10,000 in general damages, GH₵43,709 in special damages, and GH₵200,000 in compensation for pain, suffering, and loss of livelihood.
