In the wake of the party’s defeat in the Assin North by-elections on Tuesday, President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated the National Democratic Congress on its victory and advised party members to maintain their composure and not lose faith.

In a Facebook post, he thanked the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission for observing a peaceful and violence-free election.

“Yesterday, Tuesday, 27th June 2023, Ghana’s democratic credentials were strengthened even further, following the conduct of peaceful and credible elections in the Assin North by-election.”

“I congratulate warmly the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission, again, for a job well done. The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections; as is the media for providing extensive coverage before, during, and after the elections.”

“I congratulate the National Democratic Congress on its victory yesterday. I urge members of my party, the New Patriotic Party, to keep their heads up, recognizing that, in a democracy, there are winners and losers, and that we live to fight another day. We once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again,” he stated.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson easily defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Charles Opoku and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate Bernice Enyonam Sefenu to reclaim the seat of Assin North in a by-election. He was emerged victorious in the by-election that took place in Assin North on Tuesday, receiving 17,245 of the total valid votes cast.

The difference between his votes and the results in 2020 is greater than 1,300. Mr. Gyakye Quayson won that election with 17,498 votes, defeating his opponent, Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP, who received 14,193 votes.
