During a recent appearance before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah emphasized the critical need for commitment among national team players.
He expressed his disappointment, stating, “Players who come to the national team have to be committed. I am not seeing that.
They have to be committed because out of a population of 30-something million, you are part of a select 23. It is an honour. You are representing Ghana, and you must make it worthwhile.”
Appiah reflected on the team’s ongoing struggles over the past five years, underscoring that leadership alone isn’t sufficient for victory.
He remarked, “While a strong captain is important, it takes more than leadership to win matches. True success comes when every player on the team is aligned with the same objectives.”
He stressed that the collective commitment and shared goals among players are essential for achieving success on the field, hoping to inspire a renewed sense of purpose within the team as they address the challenges facing Ghanaian sports.
The Black Stars have some important fixtures coming up in their quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
They will begin their qualifiers by hosting Madagascar from November 13 to November 21, 2023. Following that, they will travel to Comoros.
In the next round, scheduled for June 3 to June 11, 2024, they will face Mali away and Central African Republic at home.
Then, from June 17 to June 25, 2025, they will host Chad and play an away match against Madagascar.
Additionally, in September 2024, the team will play Chad away and then face Mali at home
