In a world where the lines between entertainment, faith, and personal relationships often blur, Kwame Asare Obeng, better known as A Plus, has always stood out as someone unafraid to voice his thoughts.

The former musician turned political commentator, A Plus frequently dives into controversial issues with an unfiltered honesty that resonates with many.

His latest remarks about his friend, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, on UTV’s United Showbiz add to his reputation for boldness and have sparked a new wave of conversation on the evolving nature of Christianity in Ghana.

A Plus, who has built a career on his fearless stance on social issues, shared his reservations about organized religion and what he sees as a loss of genuine spiritual connection in some churches today. Reflecting on his friendship with Nigel Gaisie, he acknowledged his respect for the man but was candid about his reluctance to attend his friend’s church.

“Nigel is my good friend. If he calls me to come and play football, I will gladly do that. However, I would never go if he told me to come to his church,” he stated emphatically.

“I hear the voice of the Lord more than he does, so there will be no need to go to his church,” A Plus added, making it clear that he believes in a personal connection with God over any intermediary.

Many listeners on United Showbiz seemed taken aback by A Plus’s comments, especially as he touched on what he views as a trend of entertainment-like practices in some churches.

He continued, “Some of these prophets are not making the word of God attractive to people. They are joking with the word of God.”

This sentiment isn’t new in his commentary, but it comes with heightened significance, as A Plus, known for his insider knowledge, was speaking about someone he considers a close friend. “Christianity used to be attractive, but now the concert is too much,” he emphasized, lamenting what he sees as a loss of sincerity in religious spaces.

A Plus explained that his perspective isn’t based on hearsay or an outsider’s point of view.

He knows Nigel personally and has observed his work closely enough to form a definitive opinion. “People will go to Nigel’s church, but I know him personally,” he explained, “so I won’t go to his church, and I will not encourage anyone to attend his church too.”

A Plus’s statement reflects a growing scepticism that some Ghanaians feel toward the more performative aspects of religion.
