The latest report concerning the Christian Atsu case following the devasting earthquake in Turkey has it that the former Ghanaian international has been found alive under the wreckage and doing well, relatively.

More than 2,500 people have died as a result of a natural calamity that also affected northern Syria. In the hope that more people can be saved, rescue crews continue to look for survivors in the bitter cold.

The area saw a strong earthquake in the early morning hours of February 6 that caused buildings to collapse around those who were trapped inside, followed by another earthquake in the early afternoon.

Atsu, a former winger for Chelsea and Newcastle who now plays for Turkish club Hatayspor, was one of those initially missing.

The spokesperson for Hatayspor, Mustafa Ozat, has now announced that Atsu has been located and is receiving medical attention, but a key member of the team is still missing.

Ozat has told Radyo Gol: “Christian Atsu was removed from the wreckage injured. Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.”

Previously, an update from Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu asserted that Hatayspor vice-president Mustafa Ozat stated that Atsu and sporting director Taner Savut were still buried beneath the wreckage and that the club was attempting to contact them, contrary to what other tabloids published to the effect that he had been found.

A new statement from Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Lutfu Savas, honorary president of Hatayspor, had read: “The search and rescue efforts for Atsu are unfortunately continuing.”
