Ampem Darko Ladies have made history by securing a spot in the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Champions League in their debut appearance.
After a strong start with a 2-0 win over defending champions ASFAR, they suffered a setback with a 3-0 loss to Malian champions AS Mande in their second group game.
This made their final group match against Huracanes a must-win situation. In a thrilling game, Tracy Twum scored twice and Gnabekwan N-Yanyimaya added another goal to secure a 3-1 victory for Ampem Darkoa Ladies. Tracy Twum opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the 8th minute and despite a spirited effort from Huracanes, Ampem Darkoa Ladies held on to their lead.
Tracy Twum extended the lead in the 72nd minute with a well-timed rebound, and Gnabekwan N-Yanyimaya sealed the victory with a goal in the 88th minute.
Huracanes FC managed a late consolation goal in stoppage time. Ampem Darkoa Ladies finished the group stage as leaders with six points, showcasing their determination to compete at the highest level in African women’s football.
The CAF Women’s Champions League is an annual African women’s association football club competition launched on September 12, 2020, and organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It is the female counterpart of the CAF Champions League.
CAF issued a press release on April 18, 2022, instructing its member associations to submit club licensing documents for their domestic league champions participating in the qualification procedures for the 2022 edition by May 31 May.
AS FAR of Morocco emerged as the winners of that edition, defeating the then-defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in the final. In a separate announcement on 19 May 2023, CAF designated Ivory Coast as the host for the 3rd edition of the tournament. This decision was presented as part of the country’s preparations and readiness to host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January and February 2024.
