Burning Building Collapses On Four Fire Officers, 2 In Critical Condition

In a harrowing incident at Westland in West Legon on Wednesday, at least four firefighters sustained injuries when a building collapsed on them while battling a fierce blaze.

The Ghana Fire Service issued a statement on Thursday (25 January) revealing that two of the firefighters are in critical condition and are currently undergoing medical treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

The statement detailed the distressing occurrence, stating, “A distressing incident unfolded at Westlands, West Legon in Accra, when the last floor of a two-storey building collapsed on firefighters during a fierce fire incident.” The incident occurred in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius A. Kuunuor has visited the two seriously injured firemen at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) in Legon, Accra.

He provided reassurance, stating, “It is refreshing to note that they are out of danger and responding well to treatment per the briefs of the medical doctors at the UGMC.”

During the visit, CFO Kuunuor was accompanied by the Director of Public Relations, ACFO I Timothy Osafo-Affum, the Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO I Roberta A. Ghanson, the Deputy Director of Operations, DO I Joseph Forson, and a member of the Public Relations Department, ADO I Alex King Nartey.

The CFO conveyed the Service’s commitment to ensuring the injured officers receive the best healthcare, expressed gratitude for their selfless service, and offered prayers for their swift recovery.
