A video released by Ghanaian journalist Juliet Bawuah showcases heartfelt moments at the National Stadium in Gaborone, Botswana, where Letsile Tebogo was honoured for his remarkable achievements at the just-ended 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Tebogo secured a gold medal in the 200-meter race, outperforming American athletes Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles. Upon his return to Botswana on Tuesday, he was welcomed by a throng of fans at the nation’s largest stadium.
This victory marks the first Olympic gold medal in any sport for Botswana, and Tebogo also set a new African record with a time of 19.46 seconds in the event, surpassing his own previous record.
During the celebration, he was paraded on a bus along the track as approximately 30,000 enthusiastic supporters waved the national flag.
In recognition of Tebogo’s historic achievement, President Mokgweetsi Masisi declared Tuesday a half-day holiday, allowing citizens to join in the festivities.
Additionally, Tebogo’s 4x400m relay team earned a silver medal in Paris, contributing to Botswana’s total of four Olympic medals, two of which were won by Tebogo this year.
