Black Stars players rally behind Ati Zigi over racism incident in Poland

Several players from the Black Stars have expressed their support for Lawrence Ati Zigi following the racial abuse he experienced while playing for his club in Poland.

Inaki Williams, Abdul Baba Rahman, Joseph Paintsil, and Emmanuel Boateng were among those who took to social media to offer encouraging words and denounce the attack.

The incident occurred during St. Gallen’s UEFA Europa Conference League match against Slask Wroclaw last week, which ended with a score of 3-2 in favour of Slask Wroclaw, although Ati Zigi’s team advanced with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

The home crowd reacted negatively, directing racial slurs at the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Frustrated by the abuse, Ati Zigi left his position to confront the fans responsible for the monkey chants.

His teammates had to intervene to prevent him from approaching the offenders before he reported the incident to the referee.

St. Gallen has since notified UEFA about the occurrence, while Ati Zigi shared a photo on Instagram condemning racism, receiving solidarity from his national teammates in response.

Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams wrote: “They don’t hurt us.” LA Galaxy’s Joseph Paintsil commented “With you bro,” while Baba Rahman replied: “Stay strong brother.”
