Black Stars’ Loss to Sudan: 5 Things We Learned About Ghana’s Performance

Ghana’s dream of qualifying for the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025 was dealt a devastating blow after a 2-0 loss to Sudan. In a game that exposed several shortcomings of the Black Stars, here are five key takeaways from their defeat.

1. Defensive Fragility Remains a Problem

Despite boasting a possession advantage of 58%, Ghana’s defense was caught out twice in quick succession. Goals from Sudan’s Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Abdelrahman Yousif in the 62nd and 65th minutes respectively revealed defensive lapses, particularly in marking and organization. This fragile backline, which has been a persistent issue for the Black Stars in recent fixtures, needs urgent attention if Ghana wants to compete at a higher level.

2. Possession Without Purpose

Although Ghana enjoyed 58% of possession and completed 336 passes, there was a clear lack of penetration. The team managed just one shot on target throughout the match, underscoring their struggle to turn dominance into meaningful chances. The midfield lacked creativity, and without a cutting edge in the final third, the Black Stars were unable to trouble the Sudanese defense.

3. Inability to Handle Pressure

Sudan’s two goals came in just three minutes, and the Black Stars seemed mentally unprepared to handle this sudden shift in momentum. Once Sudan found the net, Ghana’s composure faltered, allowing the home side to control the game. This mental fragility in high-pressure situations is a recurring issue that has hindered the team in recent tournaments.

4. Attacking Prowess is Lacking

With only seven shots and one on target, Ghana’s attacking performance left much to be desired. Sudan’s defense was disciplined, but the lack of creativity and cohesion in Ghana’s forward line was evident. The absence of a clinical striker continues to hurt the Black Stars, who need a consistent goal-scorer to lead their attack.

5. Missed Opportunities in Set Pieces

Despite having four corner kicks compared to Sudan’s zero, Ghana failed to capitalize on these set-piece opportunities. Set pieces can often be a game-changer, especially in tight matches, and the Black Stars’ inability to make these moments count was a significant factor in their defeat.
