Black Stars Budget Slashed by $700,000 as Minister Ends Management Team Bonuses

Sports Minister Kofi Adams has announced a major shake-up in how the Black Stars’ finances are managed, cutting over $700,000 from the national team’s budget ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, Mr. Adams revealed that under previous administrations, members of the Black Stars Management Committee received $10,000 each as winning bonuses, while the players themselves earned $5,000.

He described this arrangement as unfair and unnecessary.
“Management Committee members were on $10,000 as a winning bonus, while players were on $5,000,” he said. “The Sports Ministry has decided not to pay bonuses to management team members anymore.”

Under the new structure, players will now receive $150 per diem, with technical staff earning $200. Payments will be made in cedis for home matches, and only in dollars for away games.

The Minister also disclosed that the GFA’s initial budget of $2 million for the two qualifiers has been trimmed down to $1.3 million. For Ghana’s game against Chad alone, the figure dropped from over $1 million to $860,000. He added that inflated ticket costs had also been reviewed and reduced.
“Flight tickets presented to the Sports Ministry are always higher than necessary. Since I took over, we’ve cut costs by finding alternative ways of purchasing them,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Otto Addo’s Black Stars have already departed for N’Djamena to face Chad on Thursday, September 4, before returning to Accra to host Mali on Monday, September 8. Ghana currently sits at the top of Group I with 15 points, three ahead of Comoros.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since responded cautiously, calling on Ghanaians to remain focused on the qualifiers.
“We deem it prudent at this time to maintain our collective focus on the immediate national task at hand,” the GFA said in a statement, adding that further clarifications will be provided after the Mali game.
