Ghana’s Black Satellites are set for a tricky test at the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast after landing in a competitive Group A. They will face the host nation, Tanzania, and DR Congo, with an additional team from UNIFFAC 2 completing the lineup.
This marks Ghana’s long-awaited return to the tournament since their title-winning campaign in 2021. With high expectations, the Black Satellites will aim to reclaim their dominance on the continental stage.
The competition promises intense battles across all groups. Group B features Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa, while defending champions Senegal lead Group C alongside Zambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone.
Scheduled from April 26 to May 16, 2025, the tournament will determine Africa’s representatives for the U20 FIFA World Cup, with the top two teams earning qualification.
Ghana’s national under-20 football team, known as the Black Satellites, has achieved significant success in both African and global competitions. They have won the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations four times: in 1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021.
On the global stage, Ghana made history by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009, becoming the first African nation to do so.
In addition to their championship victories, the Black Satellites have been runners-up in the FIFA U-20 World Cup twice, in 1993 and 2001, and secured a third-place finish in 2013.
These accomplishments highlight Ghana’s strong presence in youth football, both on the African continent and internationally.
