Singer Amaarae opened up about her experiences as a female artist in the music industry, revealing the intense scrutiny and hatred she feels from her own country.
“I don’t think that I have seen anyone get as much hatred from their home country as I have,” she expressed, emphasizing that her boldness and expressiveness as a woman often leave people shocked and intimidated.
“It is unfortunate and I think that it does also have a lot to do with me being a woman and then being a woman that is so bold and expressive.”
Currently, on tour with American singer Sabrina Carpenter, Amaarae praised Carpenter as a significant source of inspiration, highlighting the diverse musical talent she brings to the table.
“She is so musical; it is everything from pop, country, and jazz to hip-hop. I think watching and learning from her has been amazing for me,” Amaarae said during her appearance on ABC News Live Prime.
Amaarae believes it’s crucial to have “real conversations about our community,” particularly regarding the perception of women and their freedom of expression.
“You don’t have to conform and fall into any boxes; you can absolutely pave whatever path that you want,” she advised young artists. “You just have to stick to it. You have to grind it out and just see it through.”
Known for her hits such as “Reckless & Sweet,” “Like It,” “Leave Me Alone,” and “Wasted Eyes,” Amaarae has also collaborated with British rapper Stormzy on the track “This What I Mean.”
Her influence and contributions to the music industry were recently recognized when she was honoured as the ‘Woman of the Year’ at the 2024 3Music Awards, held on September 28.
