Nico Williams emerged as a key player for Spain during their impressive run to secure their fourth European Championship title in the 2024 tournament.
With top European clubs vying for his signature, Athletic Bilbao has assigned him the prestigious number 10 jersey, likely as a strategy to deter interest from rival teams.
On Monday, the winger received the number 10 jersey, a number once worn by club legend Iker Munian. Williams Jr will now transition from his previous number 11 to this new number.
“I’m proud to get the shirt number 10 from Muniain and to make history as he did,” he said.
In July of this year, Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, expressed that the club is capable of acquiring a player such as Nico Williams. He also mentioned his strong admiration for the winger.
“Economically speaking, we could commit to the signing of Nico Williams,” Laporta told Catalunya Radio.
“Nico’s a player I like — I like him a lot. We are working with [new coach Hansi] Flick on possible signings. Now we have to leave [sporting director] Deco to close the operations we are working on.
“Shortly we will be able to announce some good news with regard to the financial [issues] and we will be back within LaLiga’s Fair Play limits. And that will allow further good news in terms of [signings].”
